PLATFORMER / BROWSER PROJECT
Celeste Classic in browser
The authors' original PICO-8 Celeste, distinct from the later commercial game. Its game frame reached the first snowy room and responded to Right; the embedded launch path needed a separate-frame check.

Basis: project instructions and limited desktop entry observation. Observations: Oct 15, 2026. Conditions organized: October 15, 2026.
Embedded attempts stayed at the title. The exact author-page frame opened separately reached the first room, Return paused/resumed it, and Right moved the character without an account or own files. Other gameplay, mobile input and completion remain unverified.
Source & instructions (opens in a new tab)Project type: Native browser game
The authors publish the original PICO-8 platformer's HTML5 export on their own itch.io page. It is not a port of the later commercial Celeste game; this classification does not call PICO-8 a native JavaScript engine.
Classification organized October 15, 2026 from the recorded source and check notes; not a new gameplay test.
Before you open it
- This is the original PICO-8 Celeste Classic, not the full later commercial Celeste release
- The author page documents arrows, X and C; our successful scene and movement check used its separately opened game frame
- The optional Support This Game donation link was not needed or used for our recorded entry
Getting started
- Open the Maddy Makes Games author page and locate the embedded Celeste game, separate from support and collection links.
- Our embedded attempts stayed at the title; we checked the exact frame used by that page separately, not a third-party mirror or downloaded build.
- After X input the first room was visible under a Return pause menu. Return resumed and a short Right input moved the character; other gameplay actions were not tested.
What we checked
On October 15, 2026, the author page displayed the Celeste title and X+C prompt. Initial embedded input attempts did not visibly leave that title. We then opened the exact game_drop iframe URL separately: after X input, Return exposed a pause menu over the first snowy room. Return resumed it, and holding Right for 300 ms moved the character on the lower-left platform. No registration, payment or own files were requested along that path. Jumping, dashing, collectibles, save recovery, mobile input and completion were not verified.

The source credits Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry and describes a PICO-8 mountain platformer made in four days. Its link to a later full release is not the same browser game. The runtime URL is recorded in the guide only to explain our check, not as a separately endorsed mirror or a second project.

Which Celeste Classic project?
This Celeste Classic browser guide covers Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry's original PICO-8 mountain platformer on the Maddy Makes Games itch.io page. It is not the later commercial Celeste game in a browser, and a link from the author page to that later release does not change the identity of the embedded game. The source describes the classic project as made in four days and lists the arrow keys, X and C. Those statements identify the work and its documented controls, not a complete gameplay result.
Our October 15, 2026 check required an important distinction between the release page and its game frame. Initial embedded input attempts stayed at the title. We opened the exact frame used by that page separately, then reached the first snowy room and confirmed short rightward movement. This guide records that successful frame-level path rather than claiming the normal embed launched smoothly in our environment. The first browser-publication date remains unestablished; our review and guide dates are not substitutes for it.
Guide published . Source reviewed . Author release-page publication: Not established. The inspected author page did not establish a verified original publication date for this particular browser export.
Maddy Makes Games' original Celeste Classic page and controls (opens in a new tab)Six conditions for Celeste Classic in browser
Game files
The author page and its game frame did not request a local archive, cartridge upload, installation folder or payment before the first room. The PICO-8 web export loaded online resources provided through the author's itch.io release. That is different from not downloading anything: a browser game still needs its code and assets. We did not measure transfer size, inspect caching or test a disconnected launch. Tab Game Guide hosts no copy of the cartridge, runtime or later commercial game. The exact embedded frame was a continuation of this one checked release, not a second game or a replacement asset mirror.
Controls
The title showed an X+C prompt and the author page documented arrows, X and C. Initial key attempts inside the embed did not visibly advance it. In the separately opened frame, X input was followed by a first-room scene; Return exposed a pause menu with Continue and Reset Cart. We used Return to resume, then held Right for 300 milliseconds and saw the character move on the lower-left snowy platform. We did not choose Reset Cart. Jumping, dashing, wall movement, collectible interactions and complete key bindings were not verified by that single direction check.
Account
No account, password, email or payment was requested on the recorded path to first-room movement. The author page separately offered Follow, Add To Collection and Support This Game. We did not use those actions or infer that their account requirements apply to starting the game. The optional donation link was not a prerequisite encountered in this check. A bookmark in this directory is also separate from an itch.io collection or game progress. We did not create an account, test a community posting flow, synchronize progress or inspect any later service that might have its own conditions.
Mobile gameplay
Not tested. The check used a desktop browser, keyboard and game canvas. We did not establish a touch overlay, test simultaneous mobile actions, rotate a device or pair a controller. PICO-8 being the development platform does not prove a particular web export supports the input method needed on a phone. Our narrow-screen checks concern this directory's guide and image, not the external game. The independent-frame route also should not be generalized as a mobile workaround or a guarantee for every browser; it records what worked in this one desktop environment.
Full session
We observed the initial snowy room, its small character, platforms, spikes and a flower, then confirmed brief horizontal movement. We did not clear the room, climb to another stage, collect an item, test a dash or reach the mountain's ending. The runtime pause menu appeared and resumed, which confirms a menu response but not save persistence. We did not reload a running game, restore progress, inspect statistics or test a reset. The screenshot therefore documents an opening scene from the actual game frame, not a completed run, high-score submission or review of the later commercial release.
HTTP link check
The author release URL returned HTTP 200 with no redirect in a separate HTTPS check on October 15, 2026. That response is for the release page, not a guarantee about every itch.io asset host or about the embedded input route. Browser inspection separately established a title in the embed and a first room in its independently opened frame. We retained certificate validation and did not bypass a warning or change browser security settings. If your visit stops earlier, record whether the author page, title or game input is the missing stage instead of treating them as equivalent checks.
Author page, game frame and later Celeste are different things
The author page used game_drop with the observed frame address https://html-classic.itch.zone/html/235259/Celeste/index.html. We opened that existing address to separate the game canvas from the surrounding page after embedded input did not visibly leave the title. We did not search for an unofficial mirror or recommend weakening iframe protections. That frame address can change as an author updates a release, so the author page remains this directory's main project link. The classic game and Celeste Classic 2 are also separate releases with separate entries and screenshots. Neither entry should be read as a browser delivery of the later commercial Celeste game, a download entitlement or confirmation that every action and level has been tested.
GOOD TO KNOW
Celeste Classic browser FAQ
Is this the full commercial Celeste game in a browser?
No. It is the authors' original PICO-8 Celeste Classic. The later commercial release is a separate game, even though the author page links to it.
Did the embedded launch work directly?
Our initial embedded input attempts stayed at the title. We opened the exact game frame used by the author page separately and reached the first room there; that distinction is retained in the check.
Which controls were confirmed in the game frame?
Right moved the character briefly on the first platform, and Return exposed and resumed a pause menu. Jumping, dashing, wall movement and complete bindings remain unverified.
Did entry require payment, an account or my files?
None was requested along the recorded path. The author page's support, follow and collection links were separate optional actions and were not used.
Were the mountain, mobile play or saves tested?
No. The check stopped in the opening room after basic movement. Completion, touch input, controllers and persistence remain unverified.
